Surface is a hybrid art/performance project combining dance, music, and light. A unique steel and fabric structure translates movement and gesture into distortions in the image field, creating flow patterns and the suggestion of monumental form. Candelario's choreography, informed by her in-depth study of contemporary butoh movement, explores that sense of form as space and transformation on a grand scale, ranging from tectonic to cosmic. Parsons' video projections, which converge on the screen from both ends of the structure, are created with programming designed specifically for this project, which allows for real-time adjustments of speed, direction, color, size, and other aspects. The imagery consists of simple patterns that wash across the elastic membrane, and which is adjusted to synchronize with and respond to the dancers.
